About Luxury Train

The pioneer of luxury train travel in India, Palace on Wheels evokes the romanticism of the bygone era. Inspired by the way erstwhile kings and rulers of the yore, the train recreates the indulgent experience. The Palace on Wheels was started as a joint venture of Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation and Indian Railways in 26 January 1982. In 2009, the train was relaunched with new interiors, amenities, cuisines and itinerary. The first of its kind, Palace on Wheels ranks among the best luxurious trains in the world.

Awards  &  Accolades

The global travel magazine Conde Nast, voted Palace on Wheels as the 4th best luxurious train in the world and best in Asia. The PATA Gold Award in 1987. Various TV channels like BBC, MTV, ZEE TV, National Geographic and Discovery channel have covered this train in their various shows.


The Palace on Wheels have 14 fully airconditioned coaches and each has a unique name. Every coach is named after the former princely states of Rajputana. The Coaches of the train are decorated in the finesse of the kingdom they are named after. Color themes, handicrafts, painting, furniture and fabrics create the impression of the province. There are 4 twin bedded chambers in each coach. Each guest cabin has attached toilets with running hot & cold water and shower. Each saloon has a mini pantry offers hot and cold beverage along with refreshments. The attached lounge is equipped with television, DVD player and small library. Electronic safety deposit, internet connectivity, individual temperature control, telephone, channel music, intercom, are some added pleasures. Guests also have roundthe-clock access to a personal attendant 'Khidmatgar'.

Dining Car

The Palace on Wheels offers grandiose dining experience onboard. Maharaja and Maharani, are the two royal restaurants aboard. Guests are treated to sumptuous food of Indian and other popular world cuisines. The highlight of dining aboard are the traditional dishes of Rajasthani and Marwari cuisine. The expert chef and his team create appetizing flavors, smell and sight with utmost care of hygiene and cleanliness. Both the restaurants, Maharaja and Maharani have a welcoming ambiance. The lavish fabrics, imported crockery, subtle glass carvings, mahogany lining, dazzling chandeliers and colorful wall lamps, aptly suit the luxury of the train.


The well-appointed Bar aboard the train is another aspect of royal traveling. Enjoy chitchatting over a glass of wine with your fellow passengers. The Palace on Wheels has an extravagant Rejuvenation Spa Car. Guests are offered pampering health services on-board. The spa offers a host of Ayurveda treatments, massages and therapies. After a day's sightseeing, pay a visit to the spa and rejuvenate your senses. The professional spa therapist will treat you with Ayurvedic therapies, essential body scrubs, facial services and hand, foot, nail, hair services. The décor itself evokes relaxation. Comfortable furniture, soothing lighting, fragrant aroma soothes your body, mind and soul.



14 fully air conditioned deluxe saloons, each a combination of 4 twin bedded chambers with channel music, intercom, attached toilets, running hot and cold water, wall to wall carpeting and other amenities.


Your luggage is picked up and taken to your respective saloons without your worrying about it.


Each guest is provided with an arrival kit consisting of stationery items, brochures, cards etc. anything additional can be asked for, from the attendant, always available at your service.

Two lavish and beautifully done restaurants; "The Maharaja" and "The Maharani" serve mouth watering Continental, Chinese, Indian and Rajasthani cuisines that would definitely make way to your heart through your stomach. Health & Spa A pampering spa saloon is the recent addition in the train with a variety of therapeutic massages on offer to relax and rejuvenate the guests. Expert therapists offer specialized services to the guests; both therapeutic and beauty treatments.


Certain handicrafts and other special items of Rajasthani origin can be bought from state Govt. owned Emporia while you visit the places covered by the Palace on Wheels.


The Palace on Wheels is a no-smoking train. However if you wish to smoke, please contact your captain for guidance.


Chess, Playing Cards, Chinese checkers, Carom Board, Crossword Puzzles are available.


Your health obviously tops the chart of our priority list. First aid is available on the train whereas a doctor can be arranged on call at the very next station.


Adequate safety arrangements are made for you as well as your personal belongings in the train itself.


All essential toiletries like soaps, shampoos, moisturizers etc. are provided in the train.

Train Itinerary

Day 1: Delhi - The National Capital Of India

In the evening, around 4 PM, assemble at the Safdarjung Railway Station to enjoy a traditional welcome. Complete your check-in formalities for week on board the famous Palace on Wheels train. Enjoy a welcome drink. Later, you'll be escorted to your respective cabins through a personal attendant. Have dinner at any of the 2 restaurants of the train. The train chugs along its way towards Jaipur.

Day 2: Jaipur - The Pink City

Early morning in Jaipur, Rajasthan's capital, also known as the Pink City. After breakfast onboard, guests are welcomed at the Jaipur Railway Station & proceed for a sightseeing tour in Jaipur. The attractions that you will cover include the famous City Palace (It is an architectural wonder of Rajasthan and offers a perfect blend of Mughal and Rajasthani architecture), Jantar Mantar (Jantar Mantar is the biggest amongst the five stone observatories of India built by Maharaja Jai Singh II in the 18th century) and Hawa Mahal (This pyramid five-storey façade is amongst the most popular and most visited attraction of Jaipur tour). Thereafter, you are taken to the Amber Fort, where you can also have your lunch. Here you can shop for souvenirs in the form of handicrafts, gemstones, jewellery and traditional clothes etc. After sightseeing, you will be taken to the local markets of Jaipur. Here you can shop for souvenirs in the form of traditional clothes, gemstones, handicrafts and jewellery. By 6 PM, return back to the train for the evening tea. Dinner and overnight stay on board Palace on Wheels towards Chittorgarh.

Day 3: Sawai Madhopur - Chittorgarh

On the 3rd day of Palace on Wheels tour, enjoy an early morning visit to the world-famous anthambore National Park'. Spread over an area of 1334 square kilometers, Ranthambore National Park attracts nature lovers, photographers and film makers from far and wide. The Royal Bengal Tiger is a major draw of the park. The Jungle is home to Tigers, Panthers, Pythons, Deer and numerous bird species. Later, you de-board the train to explore the prime tourist attractions of Chittorgarh including the magnificent Chittorgarh Fort. The evening is scheduled for enjoying a high tea and Son-et-Lumiere (Sound and Light Show) at the fort.Dinner and overnight stay on board Palace on Wheels. The train will move towards Udaipur.

Day 4: Udaipur - City Of Lake

On the 4th day, arrival in Udaipur by 0800 hours. The city was established in the 15th century by Maharana Udai Singh and is quite famous for its lakes and palaces. Some popular attractions that you will visit includes Jagdish Temple, Jag Niwas Lake Palace, Jag Mandir and so on. Later, enjoy a lavish lunch at the luxury hotel. The next visit of the day is towards the City Palace and the Crystal Gallery. Boat ride in the evening on Lake Pichola. Dinner and overnight stay onboard the Palace on Wheels.

Day 5: Jaisalmer - The Golden City

On the 5th day, the train enters the city of Jaisalmer. Post breakfast on-board the train; embark on a sightseeing tour of the city. The list of the attractions in Jaisalmer includes the wellknown Havelis (mansions) including Salim Singh ji ki Haveli, Nathmalji ki Haveli and the Patwon ki Haveli. Thereafter, you can also shop at the popular local market for some exclusive handicraft stuff, which you can carry back home in the form of souvenirs. Lunch will be arranged at a famous city restaurant. Later, embark on a sightseeing tour across the world popular Sam Sand Dunes in Thar Desert. Enjoy a memorable sunset view through camel ride. Stay overnight onboard the train and depart for Jodhpur.

Day 6: Jodhpur - The Blue City

On the 6th day, arrive in Jodhpur followed by breakfast onboard the train. Later, leave the comforts of the train for sightseeing tour acros Jodhpur. The sightseeing tour includes prime attractions of the city such as the Mehrangarh Fort, Jaswant Thada and the Umaid Bhawan Palace. The lunch is scheduled in a palace hotel. Thereafter, you can explore the famous markets across Jodhpur city. Besides, you can explore the wonderful markets across Jodhpur city. Dinner and overnight stay on board Palace on Wheels.

Day 7: Bharatpur / Agra - City Of Taj Mahal - Wonder Of The World

On the 7th day, around 6.30 AM, proceed towards the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary. Enjoy the cycle rickshaw ride to view as many as 375 species of local and migratory birds. Thereafter, return to the train for breakfast and depart by 8:45 AM. Around 10.30 AM, Palace on Wheels drops you at the Railway Station and proceeds to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Agra Fort, seat of the powerful Mughal Empire. Do not miss shopping at the Agra markets where you can get hands on some interesting items such as jewellery, leather goods and marble souvenirs etc. Have dinner at a city hotel. Later, return back to the train for journey back to Delhi.

Day 8: Delhi

Today is the last day of your Palace on Wheels tour. By 5.30 AM, return back to Safdarjung Railway Station in Delhi. Post early morning breakfast, check out by 7. 15 AM.
